Self-Driving Trucks: A Reality Check

The vision of self-driving trucks leaves some to believe that this idea is both immanent and transformational, as well as skeptics who say it will never happen. But the most likely outcome lies between the two extremes. Small steps towards this idea of automation will include things have already appeared in passenger cars which will help do more to prevent crashes and supor the driver. Features such as lane departure protection and automatic lane centering, will soon become broadly available as an option in commercial trucks. On-highway testing of self-driving truck prototypes is expanding, however these vehicles still have drivers behind the wheel as a backup. Someday, drivers may be able to rest in the cab as these trucks operate autonomously.
